Summer Intern - Undergraduate: Corporate and Public Affairs - Communications #91470

Position Objective:

The objective is to learn about developing skills in reporting, writing, video and photography to provide information to our employees and our customers. Will learn about the complexities of the railroad, while also further developing journalistic skills. The Corporate and Public Affairs Department fulfills two major objectives for Metro-North Railroad: communicating to the public and to our employees. The department communicates schedules, changes to service, and emergencies on a moment, daily, weekly and monthly basis. Employee-facing info is daily as well.

Responsibilities: 

Reporting and writing articles for MTA Today, On Track Magazine, Weekly and Daily News items, and Mileposts (external news to the customers); developing an intern video project, as well as other videos as needed.

Possible work on social media composition, special safety campaigns, and other media development.

Required Qualifications:

Excellent verbal and communications skills.

Digital and website experience.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint and/or comparable PC applications.

Complete knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Ability to interact well with all levels of the company and conduct oneself professionally and with respect.

Ability to conduct interviews and take photographs.

Self-motivated and organized with strong analytical, time management and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Understanding of grammar and spelling rules.

Ability to proofread and fact-check material without assistance.

Ability of basic news story construction and news gathering skills including producing accurate and timely stories and information on deadlines.

Required Education/Experience:

Matriculated undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Journalism, Communications and/or related field.

At least two (2) years of writing and/or journalism experience.

Other Information:

Interns must be available to work 35 hours a week from May 30, 2018 to August 10, 2018.

Interns are only authorized to work during regular business hours (no off hours, weekends, etc.).

Applicants must be 18 years or older and must have valid authorization to work in the United States.

Transcripts: A current copy of transcript will be required; full time status for undergraduate and part or full time for graduate interns.

A medical exam will be required for all safety sensitive positions.

A background check is required.

Periodic feedback/surveys and final project assignments will be required as part of the internship program.

Students will be required to attend New Hire Orientation and Speaker Series meetings in our NYC facility.

All interns are required to complete a Final Group Project and presentation.

Interns may be required to travel to different locations in NY and CT.
