Chattahoochee Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Internship - AmeriCorps

Summary:  American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking TWO Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Interns to dedicate 26 weeks in support of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. The interns would be responsible for improving the park trails, grounds and landscape, both visually and fuctionally.  The Interns will be expected to performing a variety of physical labor projects requiring the use of hand tools and power equipment. 

This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic young professional who is deeply committed to the preservation and upkeep of our national parks.  Applicants will ideally have strong interest in a career with the National Park Service or facilities and grounds maintenance.

 

Start Date:    ASAP (Summer 2018)

End Date:      26 weeks from start date

Location:  Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Atlanta, GA.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is "an ancient river in a modern city," and offers many opportunities to get outdoors, including hiking, rafting, and fishing. Atlanta is Georgia's largest city and capital, and can boast itself as a thriving business and entertainment center with an eclectic mix of residents backdropped by a city with southern roots.

Compensation:  The ACE interns receive a living allowance of $200/week for food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly. Dormitory-style housing may be provided by the NPS at no cost to the interns, but local candidate are strongly encourage to apply as housing has not be confirmed to date. 

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 900-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($2,907.50) upon successful completion of internship hours.  Additional enrollment is required.

Position Description: The interns would be responsible for enhancing the visual enjoyment for visitors and improving the grounds along Chattahoochee River parklands. The interns would be mentored by the Operations Chief and the field facilities staff at CHAT.  

Duties may include:

  • Operating light power equipment such as lawn mowers, string trimmers, and many types of hand tools (such as shovels rakes, lawn edging equipment, etc.), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc.
  • Loading and unloading supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.
  • Moving furniture, removing and setting signs, painting picnic tables and signs, raking and watering lawns, trimming trees and shrubbery, picking up litter, and cleaning fire pits.
  • Diging ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; occasionally breaking up pavement, soil, or concrete; mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fills and levels holes in damaged roads.
  • Moving loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks;
  • Maintenance of power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling.
  • Bucking/limbing down trees with axe or handsaws; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc., or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort.
  • Performs janitorial duties for buildings in the absence of janitor and as back-up support.
Extensive Training Opportunities Exist as Timing and Funds allow.  Possible trainings may include: 
  • Formal NPS Federal Boating Instruction
  • Formal NPS Chainsaw Training
  • Tool and Machinery Use
  • Road and Trail Maintenance

 

Qualifications:  Applicants for the position will hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or experience in some aspect of natural resource study. This could include subject areas such as botany, ecology, biology, wildlife, natural resources, environmental science, or related disciplines.

Required:

  • Must be a US Citizen and Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18-35 years of age (interns must be 21-35 to apply for any ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties)
  • Must have a valid driver's license, provide documentation of a clean driving record, and have a personal vehicle
  • Willing to perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions and have the ability to do heaving lifting and sustained physical labor
  • Ability to carry out projects adequately with minimal supervision
  • Must take safety/protocol very seriously as the use of tools and machinery is integral for this position 
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Proficiency in English is required

The interns must be willing to represent ACE and NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
