Fall 2018 UNPAID Archives Internship

The Collections department at the Rochester Museum & Science Center would like to host students looking to acquire skills in archival management. Archival interns will work closely with the Archivist-Librarian to re-house, organize, and describe archival collections based on current archival standards. The collections housed in the Schuyler C. Townson Library at the Rochester Museum & Science Center represent a broad spectrum of topics including, local businesses and industries, the Civil War, notable Rochestarians, such as Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, migrant laborers, and immigrant families.

Individuals with a background in museum studies, history, and library science preferred. Qualified candidates should have high attention to detail, well developed writing skills, the ability to work independently, and an affinity for critical thinking and problem solving. Successful applicants will gain skills in archival methods, current standards, description, re-housing and preservation, and basic object handling.

 Hours and schedule are subject to the availability of the intern, but a minimum time requirement of 10 hours per week for the duration of at least one semester is preferred. After the time commitment is determined the Archivist-Librarian and intern will find a suitable weekly schedule (Collections department is only open Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm).
