Environmental Interpretation Intern

Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge will be hiring one Hispanic Access Foundation Intern to work with the Visitor Services staff and support the efforts of the New Haven Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership Initiative and environmental education efforts refuge-wide.
 
The intern will focus on developing and delivering education and interpretive programming both on and off-site in New Haven and other urban areas in coastal Connecticut. The intern will attend community meetings and other events as needed, and will help in refuge outreach efforts. Other duties may include wildlife habitat enhancement collaboration. Interns will be expected to participate in periodic calls, email communications, and meetings with HAF staff during site visits to discuss intern progress.
 
This position requires good communication skills and the ability to interact with diverse groups of people, adults and children. Most appropriate for students with an interest in program development and delivery and/or interpretive and environmental education. 
 
This is a paid internship. The intern will receive a weekly stipend of $400 based on a 40-hour workweek. Free housing is available at the Refuge Headquarters in Westbrook, CT. A housing stipend is available for local candidates (within budget limits). A weekly transportation stipend is available if needed for commuting between work sites.
 
Timeframe:
This is a 12-week paid internship. The tentative start date is Tuesday, May 28, 2019, the end date is Monday, August 19, 2019. Interns will be expected to attend 2 conferences held at the beginning and end of the term. Travel expenses will be covered by HAF.

Requirements:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Personal vehicle - The candidate must have a reliable vehicle to commute to different work sites in New Haven for the duration of the term
  • Participate in a standard U.S. Government background check if the position is offered
 
Eligibility:

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or degree seeking program at an accredited university/institution OR have graduated within the past year
  • Knowledge of or strong interest in areas pertaining to environmental education or interpretation, program development and delivery, community outreach, and/or working with the public
  • Candidates between the ages 18 to 35
  • Possess US citizenship or residency
  • Ability to work with a team and independently
  • Mature and responsible, willingness to learn
  • Good communication skills
