Visitor & Community Engagement Intern

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge will be hiring one Hispanic Access Foundation Intern to work with the Visitor Services and Management staff to support the efforts of the Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership Initiative. The intern will focus on developing and delivering education and interpretive programming both on and off-site in Philadelphia, and also attend community meetings, focusing on building community partnerships. Responsibilities will include delivering interpretive, guided walks and developing new programming at the refuge as well as in the surrounding community. The intern will attend community meetings and other events as needed, and will help to develop programming. 
 
This position requires good communication skills and the ability to interact with diverse groups of people, adults and children. Most appropriate for students with an interest in program development and delivery and the ability to engage with community organizations. Interns will be expected to participate in periodic calls, email communications, and meetings with HAF staff to discuss intern progress.
 
This is a paid internship. The intern will receive a weekly stipend of $400 based on a 40-hour workweek. Free government housing or a housing stipend will be provided if living in Philadelphia. A weekly transportation stipend is available if needed for commuting between work sites. The assignment will be based at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia, PA. It's recommended for the candidate to have a personal vehicle but it is not a requirement. However, a driver's license is required.  
 
Timeframe:
This is a 12-week internship. The tentative start date is Tuesday, May 28, 2019, the end date is Monday, August 19, 2019. Interns will be expected to attend 2 conferences held at the beginning and end of the term. Travel expenses will be covered by HAF.

Requirements:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Participate in a standard U.S. Government background check if the position is offered
  • Personal vehicle recommended 
 
Eligibility:  
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or degree seeking program at an accredited university/institution OR have graduated within the past year
  • Knowledge of or strong interest in areas pertaining to program development
  • Candidates between the ages 18 to 35
  • Possess US citizenship or residency
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with a team and independently.
  • Enthusiasm for working outside, positive attitude, self-starter, physically fit and organized
  • Mature and responsible
  • Willingness to learn
