Area Manager Intern

June - July 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I really loved the virtual lectures I attended with Amazonian speakers. I also liked how I was able to connect with other college students who were also interning for various positions and create bonds with them, so I would say the people I encountered was probably my favorite part about this internship experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a bit more clarity between the Amazon staff and the student interns. Sometimes, interns felt in the dark about what to expect (i.e. the shipping of equipment). Other than that, I can't think of anything else that I wish would have been done differently.

Advice

I would say prepared to go with the flow. Anything could happen at any moment, you just have to know how to tap into your adaptability and flexibility skills.

What I liked

The position was flexible In which it worked out best for me since I am a full-time student and I had the ability to pick up my own shifts.

What I wish was different

The network system often would go down which messed up our return process and often had to turn away customers.

Advice

Stay calm at all times as there will be random rushes and you might feel a bit overwhelmed at times.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

I would highly recommend living near the office. I chose to work from my home in order to save money, but the commute from my home The Bronx to the office was very difficult. If I did this internship again, I would chose to work in the city.

Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2022 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I felt that this internship gave me a really clear idea of what it’s like to work in this position, and it really taught me a lot about both coding and working in a team.

What I wish was different

I did feel that the team I was placed with was a little too busy to have an intern at the time (they were down several developers and my mentor was often on call and didn’t have a lot of time to answer questions and provide code reviews). My project was often stalled waiting for someone to be available to approve the current code. If the team has been up on developers and not being rushed through their own work, things would have gone much smoother.

Advice

Being able to search for answers on your own to questions is a very important skill, and invaluable in being able to save the harder questions for your mentor when they have a busy schedule.

Area Manager Intern

May - July 2023 • Suffolk, VA

What I liked

It was a great learning experience, with lots of opportunity to take charge and lead. This internship gives you a lot of freedom to learn different areas and parts of Amazon and your building. For example, I was an Area Manager in operations, but my project was more around operations engineering, and I got to learn different Areas in my building and the overall flow of it, due to my project.

What I wish was different

I wish the first week training would have been more organized and professional. The first week you work in Tier 1 positions learning the functions and processes of different areas.

Advice

Definitely spend time on your project, try to implement it and collect data, and use it as an opportunity to learn more than you would have had you not really tried on your project. I was able to implement a project that saved my building $16k in 4 weeks, with a projection of over $2M per year if network implementation is pursued.
